Casio Oceanus Manta OCW-S1050J and OCW-S1100PJ

Posted by wristwatch on October 5, 2007

Casio just announced that they are releasing 2 new Manta models from the extremely popular Oceanus line. Both will be sold in limited quantities during launch, which will be on October 13th for the OCW-S1050J and November 30th for the OCW-S1100PJ. The Manta is in my opinion the slimmest radio wave/solar powered watch. Everyone will agree with me when I say that the design is a hybrid of a sporty and dress watch, conservative enough to be a dress watch and busy enough to be considered a sport watch. The Oceanus line is actually promoted as a yachting watch, hence the name Oceanus. Some of the older models even have a tide indicator.

The OCW-S1050J will have a sapphire crystal bezel. This will mean that the bezel will be extremely scratch resistant, only diamonds will be able to dent it. Another advantage will the the gloss, even after years of wear the watch will look brand new. The Sapphire dial crystal will also be curved, which will improve visibility in daylight. Overall, this will be an improvement in the build and material quality over the existing Manta models. This will be the most expensive Manta model to date.

The OCW-S1100PJ is the Transpacific Yacht Race 2007 commemorative model. It will be limited to only 500 pieces. The Transpacific Yacht Race is the world’s foremost yacht race, of which Oceanus is an official sponsor. This model will have gold highlights on the dial and bezel. The serial numbers will be stamped on the buckle and the back cover.

One last question. The retail price of the S1050J is 157000 yen, whereas the price of the limited edition S1100PJ (limited to 500) is only 126000 yen. That certainly surprised me. Is the S1050J better quality than the S1100PJ? Also, do you know what sets apart the S1050J from the S1000J and why the S1050J is such better quality? Thanks again for all the help!

The OCW-S1050J has a saphhire bezel and the sapphire crystal is domed. These certainly justifies the increase in price.

Thanks Wristwatch, you’re right, I didn’t notice that before!

Is this watch Titanium or steel ?

  5. Oceanus said

    Hi Mark,

These are both definitely titanium watches, you can see “titanium” on the back of both watch faces in the pics above (2nd and 5th from the top). What’s less clear is what the titanium is coated with to make it scratch resistant.

I was able to get my hands on a 1050, it is a really beautiful watch. Pictures do not do it justice. Unfortunately all documentation is in Japanese, and there is no english PDF for this module on any Casio website.

    Joe:

congratulations on snagging a 1050. I was wondering if you could answer a question about the face of the watch. In certain pictures, the face looks kind of purple and wavy–I assume due to the solar charging system.

How does it look to you in person? Does it make the watch look more “mod”??

    thanks,

    Jon

    Hi Jon44,

I just got an S1050 and I love it. The face is not purple, it is dark black. The face is very nicely detailed, with the center containing a pattern of Oceanus wave logos, and the surrounding ring a series of lines. You can see the detail very well in the bottom right frame in the picture with 6 different views above. The watch itself is very thin and light, with the same dimensions as the S1000. Everything about the S1050 is better quality and better looking than the M700/800 series and S1000 series watches, including the bezel, band, crystal, and face. The only downsides are no alarm and no countdown timer.

I really like that S1050, but I really wanted DLC, so I went ahead and went with the ATV53-2834 instead.

Why are S1050 watches no longer being listed for auction on Ebay? Did Casio crack down?
I want to purchase one, but the listings have dried up.

There are still listings in ebay stores (but at 1,200$). It was another batch about a month ago but the seller had some problems (merchandise delays something like that).
Wait to see if he will have another batch or ask him (yamato2007 / kodai_2008) if he will have another batch. Keep your English simple because he is using some translator program.
Or you can ask Seiya-san http://kseiya.zoovy.com at what price he can get it for you. Keep in mind that the dollar has been going down (vs. the Yen) and that makes the imports more expensive

    Hi:

I am researching to buy a watch for the past year now, and just cannot find the one that suite my tast, until I came across this page, and oooola, this is what I want. I am just wondering how do I get my hands on a OCW-S1100PJ ?! I just love the gold decoration that makes the watch look so rich in color and classy in style. But all I find on the web are Japanese vendors and I do not understand the language. Please help!!

I just got an OCW-S1050J directly from Seiya-san. It took about a month of reading watch forums like this one and about a month to order and receive the watch, but I can say that I am happy with the results. Titanium case and bracelet, sapphire glass, reflective coating on both sides, atomic receivers that function throughout the world, classic design, world time for all time zones, chronograph, solar power, and perpetual calendar; what more can one want? Naturally, the mechanical watches have their prestige and collector’s value that I resepect as works of art, but for a multi-functional, accutate, well designed watch with longevity and style for under $1000, I cannot think of many competitors to the Oceaus OCW-S1050J. This watch will last many years. I thank all of you who contributed above and in other watch forums for helping me to make such a wise decision.

Has anyone had a close look at the 1100 (Limited Edition model)? I was wondering whether it had the same domed crystal as the 1050.
