Got time on your hands?

Vincent Bérard Luvorène 1

In conceiving his collection of “fuseau de l’infini” (literally, “spindle of infinity”) wristwatches, Vincent Bérard has in fact extended the aesthetic principle that gave rise to his “Quatre Saisons” Carriage watches: that of a round, domed case featuring a discreet bulge on the side and a transparent case-back protected by a cover. It is definitely not technical demands that determine the form of the watch, but instead the form itself that requires technical reinventions in order to achieve a specific aesthetic goal.

The first model in the collection, LUVORENE 1, thus features a case reduced to wrist watch size, measuring 42 mm in diameter and 13 mm thick. The discreet lateral projection at 3 o’clock and openworked on the dial side, reveals the oscillations of a balance with screws equipped with a Breguet overcoil balance-spring, from which the escapement and the pallet-wheel have mysteriously disappeared.

The mechanical movement, entirely developed in the VINCENT BÉRARD Workshops and visible through the glareproofed sapphire crystal case-back, is distinguished by five spindle-shaped bridges standing out on five levels and evoking the “steps” of a spiral staircase. Another special feature of the movement is the positioning of the winding-crown at 9 o’clock.

* Dimensions : 42 mm in diameter, 13 mm thick
* Dial : Solid gold in black, chocolate, ivory or natural gold color, protected by a domed sapphire crystal, with mirror-polished solid gold hour-markers, moon phases and hands, opening at 3 o’clock to display the mysterious balance
* Glass : Domed sapphire crystal with double-face anti-glare treatment
* Strap : Double-face, hand-sewn, rolled-edge crocodile leather, with solid gold clasp matching the colour of the case
* Mouvement : Mechanical hand-wound Caliber VB441 21600 A/h, engine-turned and bevelled by hand, solid gold winding crown at 9 o’clock
* Functions : Dial side: hours, minutes, seconds, moon phases, days of the week, mysterious balance. Case-back side: seconds, 10-day power reserve
* Case : Solid 18 ct. white or red gold, transparent anti-glare sapphire case-back with hand-engraved cover, see-through on both sides thanks to two anti-glare sapphire crystals

    These watches are absolutely Gorgeous, a marvel to look at.They’re complicated, yet simple. Mr.Vincent Berard is a true Master of his trades. His pocket/clock watch,the “Quatre Saisons” , is most definitely stunning, a true work of art. Even at 91mm large, it is not ostentatious, it’s beautiful. I may never be able to afford any of his work, but I do appreciate a Fine work of Art.

    I agree with you. The dial and the case back is truly a work of art. It truly takes a master to make functional art. I think this watch could qualify as a grand complication.
