Got time on your hands?

Grand Seiko SBGT019

Posted by wristwatch on September 1, 2007

Here is another elegant Grand Seiko. These watches are probably the highest quality watch Japan is currently producing. Some of them even surpass the Swiss made watches. These watches are extremely accurate. The second hand moves in 2 increments every second, well almost as good as an automatic, which moves 4 to 6 increments per second.

The second hands of mechanical movements will move five to ten times per second, depending on the beats per hour of their escapements – 28,800bph is common in better mechanical watches (like the Seiko SCVS005 on my wrist as I type this), with 36,000bph movements appearing only in a few very high-end watches from Zenith in Europe, and a few GS models in Japan. Of course, if someone were considering buying GS, you’d hope they would consider a Spring Drive model, which has the smoothest-sweeping second hand of any mechanical watch, ever…

I personally would not spend this amount of cash on a quartz watch, no matter what the accuracy or complication. The Grand Seikos are similar to the “The Citizen”‘s, highly accurate quartz watches. Gotta hand it to you, a smooth sweeping second hand is one of my weaknesses. As for sprind drive models, consider Grand Seikos or Credors.
