The Grande Class Open this year faced a new challenge, a complication capable of showing the time simultaneously in 24 different locations in the world: Tokyo, Paris, New York and even Hong Kong at a glance. Thanks to a rotating disk anchored by the hour hand, it is possible to tell the time in any time zone and, in addition, determine whether it is night or day with the help of the sun or the star pictured on the disk. This is easily done by setting the city you are in at twelve noon and activating the crown situated at 11 o’clock.

The El Primero movement? An undisputed technical feat, acclaimed as the world’s only chronograph with a heart beating at 36,000 vibrations per hour, thus enabling precision measurements to within the nearest tenth of a second.The Tourbillon? The world’s greatest horological complication, aimed at compensating for the effects of gravity by placing the escapement within a revolving carriage.

The waking dream of a brilliant mechanical specialist? To associate both concepts, thus defying the laws of cinetics. Logically speaking, since one draws energy from the dynamism of the other, the speed of the calibre should be significantly reduced. Nonetheless…

After three years of research and development, the design-engineers and master-watchmakers of the Manufacture ZENITH have achieved the impossible: maintaining speed while preserving enough power to drive the tourbillon, and thus providing the calibre with a stable balance of energies. The Grande Chronomaster XXT Tourbillon is born.

And because one accomplishment often leads to another, a second patent has been filed right behind the first: the calendar disc is inserted between the bridge and the tourbillon carriage, turning in the opposite direction. That means that while the latter revolves in 60 seconds, the date changes at midnight in the opposite direction. A double “propeller ” embodying a new kind of watchmaking genetics…

Symbolising accelerated development, the “tourbillon” or whirlwind concept represents an extraordinary intervention in the customary cadence of things. At ZENITH; the tourbillon is upward-moving and represents the spiral of life, of accelerated progress; it disrupts the established equilibrium of linear time and sweeps us towards breaking with such patterns. That is exactly why, like a face painted by Piaccso, the design of the Grande Chronomaster XXT Tourbillon is resolutely asymmetrical: the hour axis is not centered, and the hour-markers feature a crescendo movement towards the Tourbillon carriage which is set slightly to the left at 11 o’clock. The approach is resolutely modern In the white gold and black dial version, while the pink gold and guilloché dial model is in keeping with the noblest watchmaking traditions.

The engineering of this new 4005 movement, composed of 310 parts, is a source of endless fascination for the Cartesian mind. Meanwhile, the heart is immediately won over by the lyrical beauty of design at liberty. Zenith Grande Class Open Tourbillon El Primero

A star irradiates the dial, an unlikely divine intervention in a orderly world: an unusual design for an exceptional calibre with a tourbillon for the El Primero chronograph. A tourbillon ? One of the greatest watchmaking complications, posed in defiance of gravity enclosing the escapement in a gyroscopic cage. Attempting to associate it with the El Primero movement, the mythical chronograph beating at a rhythm of 36,000 vibrations per hour, seemed an impossible challenge. But the skilled watchmakers of ZENITH Manufacture succeeded and thus created the fastest Tourbillon in the world, the 4035 movement. The cage is surrounded by a rotating date disk and in the centre the ZENITH star rules supreme. In the modern version, the white gold case and motifs contrast with the smooth black of the dial. For the more traditional model, the rose gold case and the white guilloche dial blend perfectly.

Zenith Defy Xtreme Open - Gold & Ti

Conceived as a Formula 1 car, the design of the DEFY XTREME is closely linked to its function. The dials, for example, combine two complementary methods of construction: multi-layering, where the layers of materials are placed on top of each other, and honeycombing, which - like a bees’ nest – makes the materials stronger. The Manufacture’s engineers have also used the physical theory of shock waves to help design the case so that any shock is dispersed and therefore absorbed by the structure as a whole, rather than concentrated at a single point. The helical hands of the counters are also a guarantee of greater strength because they dissipate energy in case of shock.
