Radiomir was the first watch model created by Officine Panerai. A watch that crossed the history for the heroism characterising the value men who wore the Panerai at the beginning of the ’40. In that period this model presented for the first time some technical innovations which determined from the very beginning its character and its qualities: a case very easy to read, winding crown, screwed back and a strong cushion shape, but very simple at the meanwhile.

Created in 1938 for the Royal Italian Navy as the first Panerai watch, the Radiomir was characterized by its large size and water-resistant case, the legibility of the dial in immersion, its robustness in extreme use conditions, a reliable movement. Presented in 1997 in the Replica version, an edition limited to 60 units, the Radiomir became a rarity much sought after by collectors throughout the world for the restrained elegance of its design, with its cushion case, wire loop strap attachments and for the technical features of the used mechanisms: reliable haute horlogerie movements. Originally welded to the case, today the strap attachments are fixed by an exclusive system of screws (patented), developed by Panerai, which makes it very easy to change the strap.
The contemporary Radiomir collection is composed of the Radiomir Black Seal® Automatic, the Radiomir GMT-Alarm, the Radiomir Chronograph and the Radiomir Chrono Rattrapante.
The Radiomir GMT/Alarm watch has a 42 mm steel case and its functions include, besides date, hours, minutes and seconds, the indication of the second time zone and the alarm function. Two crowns on the side of the case: one for winding the watch and for setting the time, the second time zone and the date, the other for winding and for setting the alarm, indicated on the flange by a centre arrow-shaped hand. The automatic mechanical movement has Panerai personalised bridges and oscillating weight and is visible through the see-through back. The oscillating weight powers both the time train and the alarm train. The Panerai Radiomir GMT/Alarm watch is available in polished steel and in 18 ct pink gold.

The Luminor 1950 Tourbillon GMT is equipped with the Calibre P.2005, a movement with a tourbillon escapement, the greatest technical expression of mechanical horology: a complication notable for the difficulty of its construction and the accomplishment of which is the result of the outstanding craftsmanship of master horologists and the most advanced electronic technology. The special feature of the regulating organ perfected by Panerai lies in the fact that the tourbillon cage rotates on an axis at right angles to the axis of the balance wheel and that it makes two rotations per minute: this rotation, which is faster than usual, ensures greater accuracy, providing the best compensation for the irregular rate caused by the effect of the force of gravity. The fascinating motion of the tourbillon, which attracts the attention of everyone who looks at it, can be admired from the back of the watch, while on the dial side there is a little circular blue indicator, within the seconds counter at 9 o’clock, which travels twice as quickly as the seconds hand because it moves at the speed of the tourbillon cage.

The Radiomir Black Seal® Automatic inherits the historic model’s stricking personality; it is a - time only – watch of generous size (45 mm) made from AISI 316L steel. This format more in keeping with contemporary trends, celebrates the elegance of the design and the slenderness of the cushion-shaped case, which combines structural robustness, confirmed by water-resistance to 100 metres, with the screw-down winding crown and back. This model is equipped with the calibre OPIII, an automatic mechanical movement whose finish is reinforced by its Côtes de Genève decoration. It features on its black dial Arabic numerals and luminous hour markers, with continuous seconds at 9 o’clock, a stylistic detail which is part of Panerai’s DNA.

Ferrari themed watches manufactured by Panerai. Great design and really cool if you own a Ferrai (the car) yourself. For those of you (like me) who can afford the car, the watch might be something to aspire for.
