Blog Action Day

Today, October 15th, is Blog Action Day. Bloggers are encouraged to write something about the environment. The idea is, that blogging has become so popular, that the collective voice of the bloggers around the world will affect some change. I would like to talk about global warming and what we can all do to slow it down a bit. All of us has seen these compact fluorescent bulbs, these bulbs with strange shapes that consume 6 times less energy than their incandescent counterparts. Another thing is that these compact fluorescent bulbs produce little or no heat at all. While incandescents turn 90% of the energy they consume into heat. In a country like the Philippines, we don’t need any more heat, its already hot enough in my country. The excess heat produced by these bulbs just add more work for the air-conditioning, which in turn consumes more energy to keep the room cool. Most light bulb companies sell both incandescent and fluorescent bulbs. For retailers and lighting manufacturers, every energy efficient lamp sold represents a loss of 6 or 8 or 10 incandescent bulb sales. So when a company like Dewitt comes around, I decided to buy all my lighting requirements from them. Dewitt decided to stop all production of incandescent lights and stick with just fluorescent lighting. Their philosophy is, if they don’t sell it, nobody will buy it. A great commitment to saving our planet for a lighting company. Well, unfortunately not all lighting companies are like this, so therefore its up to us, the consumer to make the choices. To prevent the further deterioration of our atmosphere, we should stop buying lighting products that are not Earth friendly. Dewitt’s slogan really sums up what fluorescent lighting is all about, save some energy, save some money, and save the planet.
